The State of Israel: Who Will Be There to Help Her? 500th Post

For my 500th post, I am going to write about a subject for which I have extreme passion and, if the truth be told, concern, now: the State of Israel. The situation there, at this moment, is somewhat troublesome to watch, but as usual, writing, I hope, will focus some of the questions and concerns.

Israel is in trouble now. One may look back on history and say that Jews have always been the targets of victims of enemies who did not want them to exist from the time of pharaoh, to the pogroms and concluding, but not necessarily ending, with their extermination by Hitler and Nazi Germany. It seems, to me, however, at least through these eyes, that the world, today, as it exists is a different place. For one, our numbers have diminished substantially, and there are so many more Muslims, even in Israel itself, who do not wish to recognize the State of Israel at all, leaving the Jewish people as a literal target of hate, and G-d forbid, destruction.

The trouble has been brewing, and we saw serious fighting last August when Hezbollah infiltrated the state from the north, and had weapons that penetrated the state, reaching the city of Haifa, a place most thought was free from terror. It is my guess that Hezbollah is 100 percent re-armed now, and with the help of Iran, does pose itself as a formidable concern and enemy to the state of Israel.

Today, it was announced that the new Palestinian Government will not recognize Israel. As we see Palestinians are divided into two groups now, the Hamas and Fatah, my fear is that Jews will also divide one day, into the religious and the less religious, and ultimately, begin a civil war against each other as well. We saw a bit of this drama play out during the gay parade in Jerusalem when Jews were fighting one another. Can we, whose numbers total less than 14 million worldwide, really afford to become an enemy unto ourselves?

Who, when the going gets rough will be there to help Israel in her time of need? Can the Jewish state rely on anyone really, if Iran rears its ugly head, or if Hezbollah begins to re-emerge, with the help of Syria and other Arab nations? Where does Israel stand today, if her own people cannot become united, but stay divided on the future of its own nation?

These are indeed some very worrisome times for Israel, and these are questions, which I believe, we must think about with seriously when thinking about the situation in Israel and the future of the Jewish State.

Thank you for your minds.

Thank you todd.

Yesterday, Israel had launched its first night missle in an attempt to see whether it could intercept weapons from Iran. Very serious indeed.

Dear Barbara,

I read your post yesterday, on Sunday night. I had to think hard about a response.

Saturday night I watched the Christiane Amanpour documentary about Daniel Pearl. It ran on PBS.

I was stunned and speechless. I am aware of some anti-semitism here in the US, as I am aware of other forms of bigotry.

Yet I cannot say that I have personally encountered the vitriolic, heinous animosity towards the Jews, that I saw vividly portrayed on that documentary. ( which doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't exist here in the US)

I try to be well educated on the matters of the middle east. Still, now I wonder if I truly understand the depth of the hatred of those who are neighbors of Israel. Who could do such things?

At the same time, yesterday morning I read in the Los Angeles Times about a homeless couple, who were asleep on the sidewalk in LA. Someone came along and doused them with gasoline and lit them on fire.

What is wrong with humanity?

So my point is that your concern is well founded. My present opinion is that it may not be simply an issue of foreign relations, or who runs the White House. Regardless of who is currently President of the US, and regardless of our nation's foreign policy, we as humans must stand up to the evil that exists around us.

But how to do it????

It's scary to think of the situation in 'real terms'.. because in fact, in real terms.. Israel has NO CHANCE - not one..
In 'miraculous terms' though.. as has always been...she has every chance and every guarantee that she will survive. May we merit to see this speedily.

Isn't it ironic that the same thing is happening right here in America..

Wow, 500 posts- good for you.

Its always time to worry about Israel, but its even better to do something about it. Buy something made in Israel or make a donation. I know you've done these things, but its still important to do. The harder things get for Israel the more we have to do.

Thank you for your good wishes.

The situation is Israel is scary for the moment. Unlike America, who has some 'friends and alies,' Israel truly stands alone.

WW, you have always been a friend and defender of the Jews, and I thank you for it. Anti-semitism, like any form of hatred or racism (although Jewish is a religion) is terrible.

500, that's remarkable.
You make a very sound point.
There's nothing so ugly as when Jews themselves can't get along.
The fact is that Jews (and perhaps one day gentiles will see that) are people too.
Just like 'regular people' fight, discuss, debate etc.
So do some Jews.

Great question...I am a Christian and a firm believer in the statehood of Israel, but not because of my Christianity. In other words, I believe it because it's only right!
I have a very dear Jewish friend who is very liberal politically and this is what I don't understand. Traditionally, it is the conservative political party that defends Israel. Look at Jimmy Carter and his abomination of a book!
Joe Lieberman gets it...
As for a solution? I don't know if there is one. As long as politicians keep giving in to evil, evil is certain to win. And that is scary.

Secondly, ""Who, when the going gets rough will be there to help Israel in her time of need?""

I think that the only one we can really rely on is G-d Himself to help us.
