Donald Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense

Staying on the warpath, as my husband would say, will probably continue for me for at least a few more days.Like a true warrior, I intend to see this one through until the bitter end! Not surprisingly, today, I read in the newspaper how the White House is downplaying the abuse issues involving the Queran. Truthfully, I am not surprised, as this administration has been less than honest when it comes to taking a look at themselves and their mistakes. A key example is the role of Donald Rusmfeld as Secretary of Defense.

Despite many recent mounting concerns regarding Abu Graub, the incidents with the Koran, and the presence of the United States inside of Iraq, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld continues to remain in office. In fact, curious is the situation, how when the Bush administration claimed that Colin Powell was leaving, because the idea of having new people in office, both Rumsfeld and Rice remained inside the Bush cabinet. As recently as yesterday, Mr. Rumsfeld made a statement challenging China on its buildup of weapons: Here is the story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8091198/. Replacing diplomacy with threats and challenges, Rumsfeld continues to occupy center stage inside the Bush administration. Now, it appears as if he is challenging China which is likely to result in strained relations between the U.S. and this powerful country. The main problem, however, is that China has more than triple the number of people that we have here in the United States.

Here is the question of the day? Is Donald Rumsfeld an albatross for our country? Is his presence and antagonistic tone putting straining relations between the United States and other European nations and now China as well? Should he be forced to resign?

Thank you for your minds.

Very good point, J.

The entire culture surrounding the military is quite complex indeed.

Donald Rumsfield is a horse's ass. I do not know how else to describe him.

And has anyone else noticed the beady eyes look he gets when reporters ask him questions about policy? That squinty beady eyes evil bastard look he gets? It is getting old.

In regards to China, it really does not matter what the evil bastard says. The USA is trying to get China to float it's currency. Right now, China pegs its currency to the dollar at a fixed rate. This is what keeps imports from China so cheap, the dollar is worth considerably more than the yuan.

Business likes the pegged rate. It makes China a lot less volitile. The administration, under pressure about outsourcing, wants China to float its currency.

But China is not stupid. I do not think they will float their currency. Neither does Econo-Girl (econo-girl.blogspot.com).

So, all this China talk by The Donald is just white noise. China makes too much money selling us fake dog poop, and we are addicted to the unlimited access to cheap stuff. The USA is putting pressure on China, and they are resisting.

It is just noise. There will be no war with China, nor will there be an embargo. We need them, they need us. Money is more powerful than government.

Hi again!

You have a good site here..!!!
Lots of thorny subjects!
Firstly, I would like to say that I have been to the US, and love the people...it is important that I say that first, so that what I say will not be mis-read by anyone.
From a European perspective, the outlook of the current US administration is dangerous.
The "If you`re not with us then you are against us", appoach will just endanger the goodwill the US has always relied on.
When France disagreed with the US over Iraq, it was the Democratic right of France to do so.
However, the US administration then embarked on a dreadful campaign against France, affecting their trade. It came down to little more than bullying.
It is also a bit scary, as it shows a dark side. It is undemocratic behaviour, and will not win friends from other democratic nations.
Negotiation and discussion can win hearts and minds, but bullying and coertion definately will not. It merely reinforces and consolidates viewpoints.
It is such a shame, as the US is a wonderful country, with a lot to offer the rest of the world.
