Do you believe in miracles?

Although there is plenty to talk about in relationship to politics today, let me step away from the subject for a moment.

Surely at some point in our lives, we have come to the conclusion that something that has occurred is miraculous. The sight of a new born baby, the blossoming of a beautiful flower, recovery from a disease, such as alcoholism, or an illness that by all accounts should have taken a different turn but has given us a second chance in some way. In one instance or another, we may have stated, 'this is truly miraclous!'

For example, my dog, a 12 year old golden retriever was diagnosed with cancer when he was 7 years old. He is still amazingly alive, and has had no remission. Our vet constantly refers to him as 'the miracle dog.' It is truly the case, that some results cannot be understood or explained, and in my opinion, perhaps just as well.

It is difficult for me to say whether these phenomenon are the results of the nature of the unfolding of something as it should be as part what exists in the universe, or occurs according to God's will or plan, if you will, or is aresult of some miraculous occurrence in and of itself. In fact, it could be a result of any or all of these thiings.

So here is the question of the day: Do you believe in miracles? How do you explain them? Give an example of something that has happened to you or a loved one that makes you conclude that it is the result of something 'miraculous.'

Thank you for your minds.

Do I believe in miracles? Yes
Do I expect miracles? No

Some people hop on the miracle band wagon and call just about every good occurrence a miracle. Believe me, I've known people like this, and they really water down the meaning of "miracle."

I have had and have known people who've had better than expected health results and who've had unexpected blessings financially. Were these miracles brought about by the hand of God? Probably not.

I think when there's a miracle, there is no doubt and no other explanation that can be given for it.

An epistomological and empirical person at the same time.

Some very good points you make.

I think the issue of good vs. bad luck is definitely not to be over-rated as well. Sometimes things happen without explanation, as I noted in my original post.

Personally, it does not really matter what you call something in the end...It is the experience or lack there of which is meaningful.

Be well.

I'll side with the "believers". I can think of a couple of instances too extreme to be otherwise. Nothing of a "sea-splitting" nature, but for me it wouldn't have happened without some extraordinary kind of intervention.

I'd like to say that I believe in miracles but in my heart I don't.

I know that I have many blessings in my life and wonder why I have been given so many when others have been given so few.

Hi dear Atreau,

So good to see you! I like that distinctinon between blessings and miracles.

Each and every good day is a blessing in my opinion.

Be well, sweet stuff,

Lori,

You are most kind indeed. I have written your email down (love the name, by the way). I'll have a look at the book on Amazon.com and if it is something that I would like, I'll send you an email. Thank you again for your kind offer.

I don't really use the word "miracle" because to me, that implies that the source of the good fortune is a god. I do, however, feel amazed by/awe-struck by/humbled by/incredibly grateful for many things in this world. A new baby is absolutely amazing and precious, for example.

I think the natural world is amazing enough and does not require a god to make it "miraculous".
