What is it About September?

As the month of Elul has begun to descend upon us, and we examine ourselves, honestly in preparation for the New Year, so many thoughts surface, like a running stream that does not stop. And to make matters even more complex, September is beginning, a month that has not been too good to me for the last couple of years.

Over these past few days, it would be fair to say that I have been pre-occupied with some health related issues. Often consumed with worry, and propelled by fear, it is very easy to get myself into the worse case scenario involving any issue. Am I alone in this thinking? I doubt it, as from talking to others, being in the public, and reading your blogs, it is often the case that our heads take us to places and conclusions that have little, if any, basis in reality. As it is the case, more often than not what I think is not correct, thankfully.

Why is this the case, and what is it about one’s make-up that allows this to happen? Are some of us more inclined to jump to the wrong conclusion too quickly? It was not even 3 weeks ago when we made our daring trip to Israel, and although we were all right with the idea of leaving, even when the country was in the middle of a war, so many around us said that we should not go. Is it fear that gets in one’s way, or is it that we do not have enough faith in our Creator?

Going to Israel was not difficult, even during a war for me, but when it comes to some things, especially in the area of health, going to that dark, fearful place in a New York minute comes so quickly. For example, yesterday and today, I was so wound up, scared, thinking the worst, that I decided it was best to get outside of myself more. So what did I do? I prayed more, and tried to do more good deeds for others. In fact, I even offered to type the resume of one of my colleagues who is computer challenged. “How generous of you,” he remarked, when all the while it was me who I was thinking about, i.e., if I do something good, kind for this person, maybe good will come to pass for me as well. As it turns out, being kind did allow me to do something for another person, but it also got me outside of myself so that I was not consumed by fear. As it turns out, for today, this very moment, the health issue has subsided.

On a note: We are going to Houston, Texas for the long weekend for a wedding. I hope everyone has a meaningful Labor Day, and remember, to live each moment to the best of one’s ability. Hang on to those blessings, and remember them clearly, as it is the case that life, in all its glory and temperament, can indeed change in an instant.

Thank you for your minds.

I agree completely, when we have a chance to help others in small ways we gain more than we give!

I totally understand what you are saying. Health is so important to me that I can really let my mind run away with me about it. I think worrying is in our Jewish blood.

Have a wonderful time in Houston. If you have a layover in Dallas (which is quite possible if you are flying American Airlines), I would love to meet you! I live 5 min. from the Dallas airport.

Have a safe and wonderful wknd.

Prag - It is so true, and it gets us out of ourself too.

Stacey - I would love to meet you, but the flight is direct. Hopefully, there will be another time. I'll send you some of our pictures from Israel when I return.

Rushing off to court. Shabbath Shalom. Have a good weekend.

Hi Barbara! It's been a little while, and I wanted to pop in and say hello and wish you well.

September is always an exciting time for me, because it's just one moon away from my favorite time of the year. Spring/May is my difficult time of the year.

There are many times when I can find myself drifting off track as you've described. Eventually, something comes along to jostle me back into focus, and I'm ready to move ahead again.

I think sometimes, before we can move forward and progress, we occasionally must step back and remind ourselves of why we’re following our particular path, and what it is that moves us in a particular direction.

Sending you good thoughts,
JLB

Barb,

Have a good trip and remember, it's gonna be ok - it always is.

Now for a message from our sponsor!

Sorry I don't get a chance to comment much anymore, life got exceedingly busy in a short period of time.

I'll be honest in that this is not entirely a social call. I have been selected to compete in a local blogging competition on the isssues facing America. It's sponsored by a business-lifestyle magazine linked to an event put on ny the Sac Chamber of Commerce.

The event is probably geared towards a slightly right-of-center audience (business people), but I'm ok with that. I posted today about it with all the appropriate links. I'd appreciate it if you would take a look - it kicks off on Tuesday.

Thanks,

Mike

What a beautiful post.
Many of us feel the same way.
My old doctor was wonderful. He was very British, had the worst bedside manners ever - lol - but was one of those that was soft and squishy on the inside...
He was an incredible diagnostic. and anyway - whenever i'd go in with an unusual symptom - or something i was deathly scared of.. he would sense it without me having to say it.. and he'd shout
Mrs X - You arrreee (british accent) NOT dying!!
and it would be all i needed to hear.
Sadly he passed away suddenly at the young age of 57.

Anyway -about going outside of yourself.. that is what people do - in sickness and in health - they go outside of themselves to feel more fulfilled - and in doing so - help themselves, certainly others, and make the world a better place.
As you do, dearest Barbara.
I'm glad things are okay now.

I think there is something there in your idea of getting out of yourself and its correlation to health.

It is always difficult to interpret whether we are altruistic or anomic in our desire to help others (is every motive selfish?) but I think it's important to be active and help out as much as we can.

This reminds me of a conversation I was having about how there is a health condition that regularly strikes people about 2 years after their retirement. They often have a stroke or a mild seizure. Also, many couples die within six months of their spouse's death. I think this is related to the feeling of not being purposeful. It is such a shock for the body and mind not to have an occupation that it reacts in such an averse way.

So, your relation of your typing the resume and your better health makes a lot of sense to me. The soul is made both to find and fulfill purpose.

I'm happy that you could be of use. Have an excellent trip to W's hometown.

Yes, there are some things that just scare us to death. Maybe we are just insecure, who knows....

Helping others is the best way to get your mind off of "your worries".

Have a good time in Houston. I live there and happen to love it.

HiBarbara.

I think all creative people are introspective and one of the side effects is the inability to turn one's brain off! The worry button gets turned on and it's darn difficult to turn it off. My frets and health blips also seem to run with the ebb and flow of the "tides" if you catch my drift. It's all a part of being in my 40's..........

Altruistic acts, or even just busy work can definately alleviate the ruminating worries.............so do family reunions and celebrations surrounded by unconditional love. It sounds like a trip to Houston was exactly what the doctor ordered.
Enjoy your week.
