An American Celebration: Most Admired and Least Admired American
Now that I have finished some of my research, ahead of schedule, I might add, while looking at Aral's blog, I had an idea for a good 4th of July post. By the way, if you have not seen aral's blog, it is one of the most colorful, cheerful blogs out there. In fact, her blogs, and posts, put a smile on my face each morning. Here it is:http://aralecho.blogspot.com/.
So in conjunction with my post below about what the 4th of July means to you, who, in your humble opinion would get your vote for the most admired American (s)? What about your vote for the least admired American(s)? You can pick more than one person if you desire, and it could be someone who is from the past or present, alive or deceased.
And on that note, I am off to my own legal world.
Thank you for your minds.

Most Admired Americans?
Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Paul, Soujourner Truth, Ida Wells-Barnett, to name a few off the top of my head...
What does the 4th mean to me? Disappointment and Hope. Disappointment that holidays mean crap.
The 4th is our nation's bday and everyone should have it off (along with Memorial Day and Labor Day) not just the white middle class. The only people who should be working are "essential" persynell such as firefighters, cops, hospitals, etc. No McNarley's open, no gas stations, no retail of any kind.
And hope that one day the United States will *actually* be The Land of the Free.
Most Admired: I guess right now it would have to be all those serving in the military. Most of them are young and their determination and bravery makes be very proud of them. So many young people today don't have a clue what duty and responsibility means. Regardless of one's position of the war, I think we can all tip our hat and give respect and thanks to those men and women serving today.
Least Admired: I harbor great resentment (hatred is probably more like it) towards ruthless criminals who harm others for their own pleasure. People like John Cooey and the BTK killer come to mind. I really do hurt deeply for those and their families who have been victims of such brutality and violence. I can't imagine their pain and grief. Those types of criminals should be glad I'm not a judge in their case.
Have a great holiday, Barbara.
Too bad we're limited to Americans. That narrows the field.
Most Admired: Ronald Reagan (ducking the rotten tomatoes everyone is throwing)
Least Admired: Wow...so many to choose from. How about Barnie Frank, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, George Bush Jr.
And for females:
Most Admired: Ayn Rand, Libby Dole, Margaret Thatcher
Least Admired: Hillary Clinton, Gloria Steinem, Eleanor Roosevelt
And Niobium, I am not trying to flame, or be divisive, but you cannot realistically generalilze by saying that the white middle class is the only class that has the 4th off.
And the people who are working on the 4th are the people who are getting paid overtime and get an extra day off later on.
The only reason that these places are open on the 4th is that we frequent their stores on holidays and encourage the behavior! The only way to stop it is to boycott businesses on holidays.
So, I'd encourage you to organize a boycott if this is your feeling about it.
...oops, I forgot the 'American' rule. Nix on Margaret Thatcher.
Thanks for the plug, Barbara! I love your blog, too!
Most-admired... well, some would be: Harriet Tubman; Martin Luther King; Franklin D. Roosevelt. Those are the three that stick with me.
Least-admired (excluding axe-murderers and such)... it's hard, because on this category my emotions come into play even more than when picking the admired folks. I am thinking of George W. Bush, Richard Nixon, Rick Santorum, Phyllis Schlafley (spelling?), Jerry Fallwell... Hard for me to be objective.
I'm with Patty. Phallus (er, Phyllis) Schlafly is one of the least admired BY ME, whereas Richard Nixon is probably the least admired by Americans as a group. Oh, and Ann Coulter is beyond revolting, though approximately half of Americans apparently admire her and find her soulless, bleached-out, withered husk attractive.
As far as most admired individuals go, I have many of my own, but I think JFK is probably up there because he had that handsome-and-died-young cachet that James Dean had. Then of course there are people like Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Edison, etc. Oh, and let's not forget Michael Jordan (though he actually hit his admiration apex about 10 years ago).
I love Madonna!
And I hate George W. with all of my being. I put him in the category of murderer.
Most admired, I would have to say Albert Einstein (he did become a citizen), Leonard Bernstein, Susan Sotag, Elie Weisel, Harriet Tubman, among many.
Least Admired: Donald Rumsfeld, GWB, GHW Bush, Phillis Shafley, Ann Colter, Nancy Grace among many.
I almost picked Einstein for my "admired" list too. George Gershwin and Richard Rodgers continue to pop into my head... So much for keeping it to three!
Now we have a vacancy in the U.S. Supreme Court, I have failed to note Justice Clarence Thomas as another least admired, along with Dick Cheney.
Barbara: Do you admire anyone who is not black or jewish?
THC:
Now you have me laughing, which is good for the moment.
Actually, you should ask me about the Jews and the Blacks whom I do not admire, but since you do not, I will tell you who else I admire.
I admire Thomas Jefferson, Elvis Presley, and William Reinquest, believe it or not for his brillant legal mind, Clarence Darrow, and I could go on and on, but will stop, because it is late, and my husband wants me to help him.
Have a good weekend.
Opps, I forgot to mention Elizabeth Edwards whom I truly admire for her strength during the loss of her son and her subsequent battle with cancer. She is someone truly to be admired by all counts.
There are countless women whose names I do not know, but who act as caretakers for children, spouses and loved ones suffering from mental illness, autism or other types of handicaps.
I somehow stumbled upon this blog and found myself compelled to add my own thoughts.
Most Admired: Bill Gates, self-made billionaire who snubbed his nose at Harvard in order to pursue his dream of providing computer access to the world. He's directly and indirectly responsible for employing millions and has opened the 'window' for people to share information world wide. He made it cool to be a geek.
Least Admired: Marshall Mathers (aka, Eminem) who whored himself out to the music industry and made millions at the expense of sending a negative message to our kids. Then he has the nerve to cry (through his lyrics) about how fame and fortune has interrupted his privacy and family life. Poor Marshall!
A side note here to Scott and Jamie Dawn: As a Staff Sergeant currently serving with the United States Army in Iraq it really made my day to read your kind words. Thanks.
Dear Chip,
Thank you for visiting my blog.
I wish send you all good wishes, and support with the hope that you will be home soon, and with the prayer that you will remain safe.
All best wishes,
bfc
