You and Your Computer

Plagued by bouts of insomnia lately, and waking up at 3:45 am, I have found that, more often than not, I come to my computer to write, either on my blog, or read others, or work on my novel that I am writing. Since I work from home, and mostly do legal research and writing, I depend quite a bit on the computer, and the internet as well, actually allocating about fifty percent of my time to each.

It has dawned upon me, in this age of technology, just how much time I spend on this infernal machine. In addition to reading blogs, writing, I use the computer to obtain directions, shop (which can be a real down-fall, as I am a chronic shopper, conduct research on my daughter's illness, find books, and of course, communicate with others. In many ways, the computer has replaced intimacy in some ones, and increased it in others. For example, I rarely write a letter by hand anymore, which I used to love to do. Moreover, the computer has allowed me to reach across the globe, transcending time and space to become acquainted with people whom I would not ordinarily have a chance to do otherwise. So in that sense, it has increased intimacy. On the other hand, there are times when I run to the computer to do something when, in reality, it would be better for me to 'get off my butt' and go out into the real world to function.

As an additional bonus, I remember in the days before I used the computer, and woke up at 3:45 am, I would either lay in bed, or watch television, something rarely done anymore.

Here is the question of the day: How and it what ways do you use your computer? Do you feel the computer has added to the quality of your life or taken away from it? Do you feel as if you spend too much time on the computer, when you could be engaging in other activities that would allow more intimate, face to face interactions?

Thank you for your minds.

I would say I couldn't survive without it now. I don't have a computer at home, though. And I don't think it's a good thing for me to get one either - since I easily get hooked.
I have a quiet job, and I have more than enough time to use the computer for personal things there. So as long as I have this job I don't need a computer at home.
I find the computer a wonderful tool these days. I get in touch with wonderful people all over the world I wouldn't know existed without the internet. It's inspiring to see that so many people, in so many different countries, with so different beliefs - how similar we actually all are. We want the same things for ourselves and our families. It gives hope in all the hopelessness from the TV news. It gives you the tool you need to find the news you don't hear about in the TV news: how a mother struggles for her sick daughter, how a former "wild one" has settled down and what he has learned from his life. The every-day stories that inspire.
I would very much miss this tool if I didn't have access to it now that I've gotten used to it...

You brought up something that has been on my mind, also.
I would say that the computer is a double edged sword.
I have been enriched by it. In my circumstance. Living in a small town in the pacific northwest, not having much exposure to anything but the outdoors and small town life. It has been a mind-expanding experience to share in the life of other peoples & share mine, also. I have learned about a little aboutlaw from a lawyer who answers my questions (& has helped me get over my Lawyer prejudice). I have found out that there are people across the world who think like me.
I would say that blogging has brought me closer to mankind.(what I mean is that I feel less isolated)
Now, the downside. Yes, I spend more time at it & less outdoors & sometimes I could be doing Real things in the pysical world.
I am trying to find the balance. I have a habit of totally jumping into any new craft, art & hobby, at the expense of important things.
This is prob. getting too long, so I'll stop & let others have their say. Chow!

The computer is a blessing and a curse. I find that I probably spend too much time on the computer blogging when I could be cleaning the house or out walking my 3 miles a day. I gain more weight when I don't get out an do my walking. I love the email function. I can keep in constant contact with friends all over the world.

Tomorrow night I will be giving a talk and then teaching and I have obtained many of my materials via the internet. I will be making a disc to hand out to the leaders with much of the information on it. Instead of handing out mirids of paper, it will all be on one disc that they can download or look at when they need information for their teaching.

Hope things are going well with you Barbara..

Like you Barbara, I feel it's added and taken away from my life.

Added because I get to read the words of others, find information my small library wouldn't have, am introduced to new ideas, art, music, etc.

Taken away because I do not want to hear someone died via email, nor do I want someone to sit behind their screne like a coward and write me nasty emails (if you have something to say, say it to my face, or at the very minimun, on the phone). I keep myself in my house much more than I used to and don't read books like before.

PS And my ass just keeps getting fatter and fatter from sitting on it all day.

I can relate to all of your comments. This machine is a blessing and a curse, yet, as Heather points out, my children are much more computer savey than I will ever be.

It does take away from intimacy, however, in so many ways. Then again, those who are isolated away from the world, may find greater intimacy. A double edged-sword.

I couldn't survive without it. I will do all of my holiday shopping on line. I use it as a phone book and mapping service. I communicate will all my relatives via email. I blog. I read CNN and FOX every morning to see if there's any political events I should be discussing in class, and, I use it to play bridge once in a great while.

The only thing that takes me away from other pursuits is blogging. But, I love the interaction and learning that goes along with it, so I'm quite happy to continue for now.

I was here many hours ago and my doorbell rang, so i nevr got to comment...I had seen your comment on another blog and just wanted to read your blog...I saw the Jewish Bloggers on the side of your blog and wanted to share something with you...you may already be aware of dannymiller's blog.."Andy Hardy Writes A Blog'...but if you are not, he wrote this very brilliant and touchingly FUNNY piece about "The Wizard Of Oz"..I do not want to try to paraphrase this extremly wonderful piece..but, just know it involves a connection to things, Jewish...and I use this odd phrase, as someone who is jewish, myself, as is Danny Miller. Here is the link:

Feel free if you enjoy this piece to pass it on to anyone who you think might like it, as well.
I liked reading what you had to say, very much, and I will be back again, for sure.

About my computer: I think it's one of the greatest inventions of our time....I use it for just about everything and especially, at this time in my life, it has become even more important to me, and not the least of which is blogging and all the truly wonderful people I have met and conitue to meet, like yourself. Do I spend too much time on it? Probably, but that's okay, for now. Terrific question you have posed!

Hi, addict right here.
I work on the computer about 9 hours a day, and my first stop at night after greeting my wife is the computer.
On Sunday’s computer, free days and lonely evenings, internet and co.
A few years ago I would call a friend, now I meet them on msn

I use my computer much as you do, and my whole life would change if it went away! I probably spend too much time on it. Then again, the world is literally at your fingertips when you're online... Gotta love that.

I agree with those who say it is a blessing and a curse.

It is a blessing in that I have met many wonderful people thru e-groups I am in, and thru blogging; I have found a way to express myself and share my spirituality thru blogging; I have found wonderful resources, information and rare books/items, etc. thru the internet.

It is a curse in that thru the internet my husband became involved in an addiction that nearly destroyed our marriage; it is often a way for me to waste incredible amounts of time surfing around; it can be detrimental to my face-to-face relationships in that they are neglected because of time spent on the computer.

Some days, I wish this thing never existed. Other times, I am glad it does.
